This chapter, "A Tragedy of Separation," is excerpted from The Golden Volcano of Divine Love, a book by Srila Sridhar Maharaj that was published in 1983 to commemorate the Five Hundredth Anniversary of the Appearance of Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It describes (and gives some of the reasons for) the seemingly cruel and heart-wrenching sannyasa ceremony of the young Nimai Pandit [the Golden Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu] wherein He enters into the renounced order of life -- and the intense anguish of separation felt by His devotees, family, and friends.

Going Deeper
In this world we are always playing with fire. Mayadevi is very powerful. She always wants to take our time for her service. But Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has shown us that the path of our life is the practising of Krishna consciousness. That is necessary for our transcendental super-benefit. And we can cross over the illusion of Maya only if we practice Krishna consciousness under the guidance of a good Vaisnava who is giving twenty-four hours a day to Krishna for His Service; with his association we must get our super-benefit.
Affection
We need good association. Then affection will grow. Otherwise, the fitness will not come for us to progress in the higher plane. First, a relationship will come through association, and when a relationship is formed affection may come. It is first necessary to have a relationship with Guru and Vaisnava, the devotee of God; otherwise affection cannot be ours.
